Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Monday that he has ordered a military offensive in the jungle department of Guaviare (southeast) against the leader of the FARC dissidents, alias 'Ivan Mordisco,' involving bombings to dismantle the armed front operating in the area. 'I have ordered the bombing and military dissolution of the front located by the Military Forces,' the head of state wrote on X. Defense Minister General Pedro Sánchez Suárez reported on Monday morning that the operation had begun, assuring in the same social network that it is a 'contingent offensive operation' against 'narcoterrorist structures of the alias Mordisco cartel that have threatened and extorted communities and peasants' in Guaviare. Alias 'Ivan Mordisco,' whose real name is Néstor Gregorio Vera, leads the so-called Central High Command (CHC), the main dissident group of the FARC that broke away from the 2016 peace agreement and is currently present in several regions of the country, including Caquetá, Meta, Guaviare, and Putumayo. So far, neither the Government nor the Military Forces have provided a balance of the results of the offensive, which is framed in the intensification of operations against this armed group after the suspension of the ceasefire in several areas of the country.
