Colombia Seeks to Rebuild Anti-Drug Alliance with the USA

Colombia seeks to rebuild anti-drug alliance with the USA. For over 40 years, Colombia has waged a constant fight against drug trafficking, with the backing of the United States. This alliance, which the Colombian government hopes to ratify and strengthen at the meeting between Presidents Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump at the White House. This was stated by the director of the Illicit Crop Substitution Program, Gloria Miranda, who highlighted the importance of the meeting at a crucial moment for the bilateral relationship. The Colombian government will defend its anti-drug policy with figures. In an interview with EFE, Miranda noted that the expectation of the Executive is to strengthen the historical relations between both countries and to directly present the vision of the current government regarding the fight against drug trafficking. "The expectation is to continue strengthening those historical relations between Colombia and the United States, and to substantiate with data the position we have on what must be done in the country," stated the official. Bilateral relationship marked by recent tensions. Miranda, who is part of the official delegation accompanying Petro in Washington, trusts that the Colombian president will be able to demonstrate with solid data the commitment of his government to the fight against drug trafficking. The objective, she explained, is to steer the bilateral relationship during the remaining six months of the government, after a year marked by disagreements not only on anti-drug matters, but also on issues such as migratory policy and the US stance towards Venezuela. Colombia was excluded from the US anti-drug list. It should be recalled that, due to an alleged lack of results, the White House excluded Colombia last year from the list of countries that effectively comply with the fight against drug trafficking, a decision that further strained the relationship between the two governments.
