Machado says Rodríguez is 'incapable' of leading Venezuela's political transition

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado stated on Friday that the country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, is «incapable» of generating trust or stability to lead a political transition. «There is no way that a person who has been co-responsible for this tragedy can generate trust or stability. Delcy Rodríguez is incapable of generating any kind of military, security, or any other nature policy that allows for a transition,» assured Machado during her intervention in the talk ‘Let's Talk About Venezuela,’ at the Hay Festival in Cartagena de Indias. The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate maintained that any eventual political transition cannot be limited to temporary responses to the humanitarian emergency, but must aim for a structural transformation of the country. In this sense, she questioned whether this process could be led by Delcy Rodríguez, designated as acting president after the fall of Nicolás Maduro, who was captured along with his wife, Cilia Flores, by U.S. forces that attacked several points in Caracas on January 3. «We are not asking for palliative measures to alleviate a humanitarian crisis only, but structural solutions that allow for the reconstruction of the republican institutions devastated by more than two decades,» affirmed Machado. Machado stated that the current situation in Venezuela is «absolutely unsustainable» and warned about the daily worsening of the humanitarian crisis when referring to the impact of time passing on the most vulnerable population. «Every day that passes, there are Venezuelan children who cross the threshold of irreversible damage to their bodies,» as well as «hundreds of political prisoners who spend another night in the dark, in the cold, in loneliness, or in terror,» she added. The political leader pointed out that Venezuela has the necessary resources to assume the costs of a deep reconstruction and to offer a horizon of opportunities to the population. «Venezuela can finance the costs of its reconstruction and offer opportunities for millions of Venezuelans to return voluntarily to their country,» she said. Finally, she assured that in recent days there has been an acceleration of political events in her country and reiterated that the current scenario is not sustainable.
