Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes northern Colombia

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported that an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck northern Colombia on Wednesday. According to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), the tremor occurred at 03:27 local time (08:27 GMT) and its epicenter was detected at a depth of 150 kilometers in the Los Santos region, Santander department, where one of the country's main geological faults passes. The earthquake woke up residents of Bogotá and other cities in the country, such as Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander, Medellín, and Cúcuta, where people took to the streets in the middle of the night as a precaution. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported on its X account that following the 5.8 earthquake, 'a sweep is being carried out with departmental and municipal authorities to verify possible impacts,' although there are as yet no reports of damage. The EMSC also added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 157 kilometers.
