Gabo Foundation opens call for 14th Gabo Award

The Gabo Award 2026 honors the resilience of journalists who find ways to tell stories essential to democracy despite adverse conditions. Finalists in each category will be invited to the 14th Gabo Festival, the largest gathering of creators and storytellers in Romance languages, to be held in Bogotá from July 23 to 26, 2026. The Gabo Foundation announced the opening of the fourteenth call for entries for the Gabo Award, the most important recognition for journalism in Iberoamerica. During this event, the winners will be announced, who will join the references of the best Iberoamerican journalism promoted by the institution since its creation in 1995. In a context of challenges for press freedom, the Gabo Foundation seeks to reward stories that act as an act of resistance in Iberoamerica. This distinction annually highlights works that stand out for their investigative rigor, narrative innovation, and ethical commitment, pillars that foster a better-informed citizenship in the region. The award will recognize the best in journalism in Spanish and Portuguese through five categories: Text, Photography, Audio, Image, and Coverage. As a novelty in this edition, the Gabo Foundation's Board of Directors has established specific regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in the competing journalistic pieces. The initiative has the backing of the Bancolombia and Sura groups, as well as CAF -the development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean-, strengthening a long-term alliance that promotes editorial independence and the public interest. On the eve of the centenary of the birth of Gabriel García Márquez, the Gabo Foundation reaffirms the validity of the trade in a hostile environment marked by censorship, forced exile, and legal threats. Interested parties may submit their work until February 20, 2026, provided they were originally published between February 18, 2025, and February 19, 2026.
