On Sunday, elections were held in Colombia that determined the political landscape of the Senate for the 2026-2030 period. According to preliminary results, with 83.13 % of tables counted, President Gustavo Petro's 'Historic Pact' received 3,599,411 votes, equivalent to 22.84 %. Its main rival, the 'Democratic Center' led by former President Álvaro Uribe, garnered 2,473,529 votes (15.70 %). If these results are confirmed, the ruling party will maintain its position as the main force in the upper house of Congress, while uribism will once again be the largest opposition movement, having secured fourth place in the 2022 legislative elections. Following them are the Liberal Party with 1,840,821 votes (11.68 %), the center coalition 'Alliance for Colombia' with 1,566,822 votes (9.94 %), the Conservative Party with 1,516,850 votes (9.62 %), and the 'U' Party with 1,272,697 votes (8.07 %). These four forces could become the key to balance for the president who will replace Petro starting August 7, as their senators do not always maintain rigid party discipline and are divided between supporters and opponents of the current government. The 'Now Colombia' coalition (730,018 votes, 4.63 %) and the right-wing 'Radical Change-Alma' coalition (982,501 votes, 6.23 %) will also be represented in the Senate. To gain representation, parties must surpass the 3 % vote threshold. Movements that failed to meet this threshold and will have no representation in Congress include the Broad Unified Front, the 'We Believe' party, and the 'Citizen Force' coalition, which includes 'Commons', originating from the demobilization of the former FARC. The list of Oviedo, the 'Oxygen' party, and the 'Patriots' and 'Safe and Prosperous Colombia' movements also did not secure enough votes. The 'National Salvation Movement' is on the edge, registering 555,632 votes (3.52 %).
