Colombian Scammer Accuses Presidential Candidate of Fraud

Colombian scammer David Murcia Guzmán has filed a complaint against Colombian presidential candidate from the far-right movement 'Defenders of the Fatherland,' Abelardo de la Espriella. Murcia accuses him of defrauding him nearly 20 years ago. He claims that at the time, Espriella was his lawyer and cheated him out of 5 billion Colombian pesos (around $1.3 million). Murcia, who is serving a 22-year prison sentence, stated that Espriella took on his criminal defense case after receiving an advance payment for his fees, and then 'abruptly, irresponsibly, and publicly' resigned as his lawyer, without returning the money or providing any accounting. For this reason, Murcia is asking the judicial authorities to conduct an investigation, impose the corresponding disciplinary sanctions, and order the repayment of the 'improperly received fees, if applicable.' These accusations come amid a tight presidential race in Colombia, where candidate Abelardo de la Espriella and leftist Senator Iván Cepeda are in a technical tie, positioning them as the main contenders for a potential second round of elections.
