On Monday evening, President Petro's helicopter was unable to land at its destination on the Caribbean coast due to fears that unidentified individuals would open fire on it. Petro, who is constitutionally barred from running for a second term, stated that a drug trafficking gang is seeking to assassinate him. Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt just hours ago, after receiving warnings he had been getting for months about a purported conspiracy by drug traffickers targeting him. Petro's comments come amid a surge in violence just months before the presidential elections. Petro said during a government meeting broadcast live: 'We went out to sea for four hours and arrived at a place we weren't intending to go, to escape being killed.'
