Petro orders forensic examination of Calarcá's chats to decide on infiltrations

Bogota, Nov 26 (EFE).- President Gustavo Petro ordered a forensic computer examination of the chats of alias Calarcá, the leader of a FARC dissident faction, on Tuesday. The chats reveal a high degree of infiltration into Colombia's main state security institutions. Petro stated that he will only make decisions after this analysis.

The head of state referred to the matter during a council of ministers held at the Casa de Nariño, the seat of the Executive, where he reiterated his concern over the scope of the scandal revealed this Sunday by Noticias Caracol.

According to him, he gave the instruction to «conduct a forensic, computer-based examination of the chats that the Dijín (of the Police) delivers to the Antioquia Prosecutor's Office, not the General Prosecutor's Office. I hope it is the General Prosecutor's Office, and we know the truth with the backing of its forensic computer analysis, which is the entity that can do that».

The journalistic investigation revealed that the FARC dissidents have achieved a deep level of infiltration into the Prosecutor's Office, the Army, and intelligence agencies.

The report was based on information contained in computers, phones, and USB drives seized from leaders of the armed group on July 23, 2024, at a military checkpoint in Anorí, in the department of Antioquia (northwest).

In one of the revealed emails, dated February 8, 2024, alias Calarcá, leader of the State Major of Blocks and Fronts (EMBF), a FARC dissident, gave instructions to one of his men to meet with General Juan Miguel Huertas, current head of the Army's Personnel Command.

The communications also mention Wilmar Mejía, a physical education graduate who joined the National Directorate of Intelligence (DNI) in 2024 and was promoted to director of Strategic Intelligence in February.

According to the report, Huertas — close to the president — would have offered protection to dissidents and promoted the creation of a security company to facilitate their mobility.

«Based on that (the results of the forensic examination) I will make decisions, not before, because it is the truth that guides my decisions,» Petro assured.

In parallel, the Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, stated today that General Huertas will continue to lead the Army's Personnel Command while his alleged links with the dissident group led by Alexander Díaz, alias Calarcá, are confirmed or ruled out.

Huertas has categorically denied any relationship with illegal armed groups and, in a public letter, stated: «I categorically, absolutely, and unequivocally reject any attempt to link me with armed groups outside the law».
