The Colombian Foreign Minister, Laura Sarabia, will speak next week before the United Nations Security Council and will discuss the implementation of the peace agreement signed by the Government and the FARC guerrilla in 2016, official sources reported on Saturday.
From April 21 to 23, Sarabia will address the UN Security Council about the progress and challenges Colombia faces in consolidating peace, following the signing of the agreement with the FARC five years ago.
"It is an honor to present to the international community the achievements obtained in the implementation of the peace agreement, as well as the challenges that persist in our country," Sarabia mentioned in statements prior to her intervention at the UN.
Since the peace agreement was signed, Colombia has made progress in the reintegration of ex-combatants into civilian life, in the substitution of illicit crops, and in compensating the victims of the armed conflict; however, challenges remain such as security in the regions where the FARC previously operated and violence against social leaders.
"The presence of the Foreign Minister before the Security Council is an opportunity to show the world the efforts that Colombia is making to consolidate peace and overcome the obstacles that still arise on this path," emphasized a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
