Colombia Responds to US Immigration Policies

Colombian representative, Gustavo Petro, accused the USA of dealing with immigrants as criminals, claiming that they carry knives and firearms. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia reported that Mauricio Claver-Carone, special envoy of Trump in Latin America, "will quietly deliver all citizens who are being deported from the USA" and cover costs for flights for their citizens.

Petro stated that his government does not allow deported immigrants to travel with their documents. On Tuesday and Wednesday, migrants were repatriated from Bogota on military and civilian planes. Colombia proposed to cover "ordinary" costs for the deportation of its citizens from the USA, as announced by MIDOM a week after the public disclosure between Presidents Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump regarding the deportation of immigrants.

Last Sunday, between Colombia and the USA there has hardly started a trade war when Trump threatened to impose tariffs and customs duties after Petro indicated returning two military American planes that had transported deported immigrants. The Trump administration announced this week a series of sanctions against Colombia, prior to revoking them.
