Tensions Rise Between Colombia and USA Over Tariffs

The U.S. State Department has stated that it will not back down in defending its national security interests. This statement was made after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on all Colombian products, increasing to 50 percent within a week. Additionally, visas for high-ranking Colombian government officials and their families will be revoked. Trump also ordered enhanced inspections at customs, border controls, and the imposition of tax, banking, and financial sanctions on Colombia.

In response, Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, announced tariffs of 25 to 50 percent on imported U.S. products. Petro stated that he seeks to avoid a diplomatic conflict but responds to Trump’s actions with tariffs. He emphasized Colombia's willingness to open up to the world and highlighted the beauty and importance of his country.

Later, Petro confirmed his participation in a CELAC meeting convened by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, due to the diplomatic crisis between Colombia and the United States. He also announced his upcoming presidency of CELAC. The urgent summons came after Colombia refused to accept two flights carrying deported U.S. citizens. The United States suspended the issuance of visas at its consulate in Bogotá as retaliation, justifying the measure by Colombia's refusal to accept the deportation flights.

The measures imposed by the United States will continue until Colombia fulfills its obligations to accept the return of its citizens.
