Political Maneuvering in Colombia Ahead of Elections

Colombia is preparing for its first presidential round on May 31. The focus is on the competition between candidates and the influence of incumbent President Gustavo Petro. Former spokesperson Jesús Ramírez Cuevas is trying to find his place in the new political reality, building contacts for future campaigns in Latin America.

Political Maneuvering in Colombia Ahead of Elections

The South American country will hold its first electoral round on May 31. In the emerging competition between Sheinbaum and Cepeda, the coordinator of advisors, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, is trying to gain ground. Marginalized in the day-to-day affairs of the National Palace—with the exception of the morning conference—he now wants to advise the Colombian senator on his presidential ambitions. The last few weeks have been complex for the former spokesperson. Colombian Senator Iván Cepeda visited Claudia Sheinbaum at the National Palace for the second time this Monday, a level of closeness that is beginning to tip the Fourth Transformation (4T) in favor of the Historical Pact's presidential candidate. However, current President Gustavo Petro would, for now, have the War Room of Cepeda's campaign completely under his orbit. The fact that Cepeda is leading in the polls confirms the weight of the current president in his campaign decisions and, therefore, the firm control over contracts and advisories. Ramírez Cuevas understands that Cepeda is likely to win and that is why his intention is to collaborate in the campaign to later offer his services in other Latin American contests. For example, in his circle, it is indicated that he has begun to meet with businessmen whom, at his peak, he used to discredit on social media. At the present moment, the Colombian election looms as a way forward. In addition to being accused of alleged ties to organized crime in Julio Scherer's book, last week his trusted man, Jenaro Villamil, was vilified in the morning conference itself. While going through his low hours, Ramírez Cuevas is seeking to expand his network of contacts within and outside the country.
