Colombia Rejects Deported Flights from the US

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced the cancellation of flights carrying deported Colombians from the United States. He emphasizes the need for humane treatment of migrants and advocates for their dignity.

Two planes from the United States arrived in Colombia with deported Colombians, following the announcement made by President Gustavo Petro, who invited to receive them "with flags and flowers." Petro expressed his stance in favor of human freedom and dignity, highlighting that more than 15,666 American citizens were in an irregular situation in Colombia and needed to regularize their stay according to the laws of the country.

In a message shared on social media, Petro emphasized the importance of dignified treatment towards deported migrants, urging the United States to establish an appropriate protocol before their arrival in Colombia. This stance generated a new approach in the migratory relations between both nations, with an emphasis on the respect and dignity of migrants.

Subsequently, Petro revoked his decision to accept planes with deported Americans, citing the need for the United States to provide humane treatment to migrants before Colombia receives them. In another message that was later deleted, the president had called on citizens to welcome the deported individuals with flags and flowers, stating that true defenders of freedom would not attack human dignity.

On the other hand, Petro mentioned the presence of American migrants in an irregular situation in Colombia, indicating that more than 15,000 people from the United States needed to regularize their immigration status in the country. In light of this situation, the Colombian president appealed for the regularization of these migrants and rejected the entry of planes with deportees from the United States.
