At least 16 people were killed and 20 injured when a bus carrying students crashed in northwestern Colombia. The incident occurred on Sunday when 11th-grade students from the Liceo Antioqueño school in Bello were returning from a graduation trip to the beaches of Sucre. The bus fell into a ravine between the towns of Remedios and Segovia; the cause is under investigation. Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián Rendón called it «a very sad day.» The mayor of Bello canceled the Christmas lights ceremony and will install a memorial for each victim. Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed condolences, stating, «I don't like it when young people die.»
«These are bad news in our Homeland,» the president wrote on social media. Other political leaders, including former presidents Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) and Iván Duque (2018-2022), also offered their condolences.
«I am very sorry for them and their families. Especially when they are going to study or rest happily,» he added.
